I know some of scrying. I know how to, I just never have done it. It's one of the many things I know how to do, but never have done. You'll definitely want to scry in a dark bowl first. The reason i gather is because of all the imperfections in the image. Your mind pieces together the image you see for you. Then after you have the bowl down, you go to a crystal ball, one with imperfections, like quartz, you learn to gaze in that because the distortion and the imperfections help you piece the images together. Then you go to the clear crystal ball, that way you have really, really tiny imperfections that your mind can form images with, and you get clearer details. At least that's what I gather from it. Use what you are most comfortable with, I have a scrying bowl, but i've never used it (go figure). Mine is a very dark soapstone bowl.
Really, I started scrying by using smoke signs. I sat by a fire and looked at the smoke and waited for the images I saw. It's always fun to do that, it gets your imagination running.

Forgot to add in there haha, the reason it goes bowl, imperfect crystal, then clear crystal is interesting.
The bowl has a flat layer with a round bottom, that causes some distortion in the image, but the water itself can move, so the images come about when you look into the water and your mind sees all the imperfections, especially if there is a little movement in the water. The image can appear anywhere in the bowl, so it's easiest to view based on the facts that it's easier.
The crystals have distortion on all sides, bending images toward the center, imperfections in the crystal aid your vision in seeing that image because the image can attach to it. Or your mind can attach the image to the imperfection, I'm not certain. It's a little more difficult than the bowl because you have to focus in on one area.
Clear crystal puts you at the most work, you focus on the center, and the lack of imperfections allows you to fully use your abilities to see things even clearer.
It's like this, imagine the focus being a frog. The bowl allows you to see the frog jumping around. The imperfect crystal lets you take an out of focus picture of the frog, but the clear crystal allows you to take a clear picture of the frog.
Again, this is from the best of my understanding... Can't guarantee any of it because I've never practiced.
